Powering a Safer, Stronger Future: Gateway Center’s Electrical Upgrade Initiative

Community support is helping Gateway Center strengthen the safety, reliability, and resilience of the Pacific Grove campus

At Gateway Center, safety is foundational to our mission. Gateway Center’s electrical upgrade is one of the important investments we’re making to strengthen the safety, reliability, and resilience of our Pacific Grove campus. Every day, our staff work to create a caring, supportive environment where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live, connect, participate, and thrive. For the individuals who call Gateway Center home, that commitment extends around the clock.

Gateway Center operates two 15-bed Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF/DD-H) for adults with qualifying medical needs. Here, we blend comprehensive 24-hour clinical care with supportive life-skills training. As the only provider of ICF/DD-H services in Monterey County, maintaining safe and reliable electrical infrastructure is essential.

That’s why Gateway Center launched the Electrical Upgrade Initiative in 2025—a critical investment in the safety and long-term resilience of our facilities.

$241,000 Raised to Support a Critical Need

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, Gateway Center has raised $241,000 to support the Electrical Upgrade Initiative.

We are deeply grateful to an extraordinarily generous anonymous donor who made this project possible—and to our community of donors who rallied during the 2025 Monterey County Gives! (MC Gives!) campaign to help us reach our goal. We are grateful to have been among the more than 200 local nonprofits that benefited from the MC Gives! community-wide campaign.

This collective generosity represents an investment in the well-being of the people who live and work at Gateway Center—and in our ability to continue providing the essential services our community depends on.

Why the Electrical Upgrade Matters

Gateway Center’s Pacific Grove campus includes electrical equipment dating back to the building’s original construction in approximately 1970. The Electrical Upgrade Initiative is taking a phased approach to replacing critical electrical infrastructure while evaluating options to strengthen emergency power.

The project has three primary goals:

Reduce electrical safety risks

Increase resilience during power outages

Expand emergency power capacity to improve reliability for years to come

The need is particularly important because Gateway Center provides 24/7 residential services. When the power goes out, the impact goes well beyond lighting. Reliable electricity supports essential systems throughout the campus, including emergency lighting, refrigeration, heating and hot water systems, and other critical functions.

Gateway Center currently has a backup generator that supports essential life-safety and other critical systems. But we are also evaluating options to increase backup power capacity with a new generator. Expanding this capacity will help Gateway Center maintain more essential operations and be better prepared for power outages.

The Electrical Upgrade Initiative is part of Gateway Center’s broader commitment to responsible stewardship and long-term sustainability.

Investing in our facilities is an important part of ensuring that Gateway Center can continue serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities for years to come. By addressing critical infrastructure needs today, we are strengthening the foundation for the supportive services, programs, and living environments our community will need tomorrow.

Most importantly, this project supports Gateway Center’s commitment to creating an environment where the people we serve can experience dignity, safety, independence, belonging, and joy.
