Gateway Center’s Historic Milestones

Empowering Individuals with Developmental Disabilities Since 1954

1954

Opened a pioneering school for developmentally disabled children, providing a vital education to those excluded from other institutions. This foundational program was later adopted by the Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE) and continues to serve the community today.

1963

Launched one of Monterey County’s very first Adult Day Activity Programs, creating new opportunities for connection and growth. Established an innovative infant stimulation program, which is now successfully operated by the MCOE.

1975

Purchased the 850 Congress Avenue property to establish our dedicated Day and Residential Programs. Introduced a Residential Respite Program to provide essential support and relief for families and caregivers.

1983

Opened a dynamic workshop and supported employment center in Seaside to foster vocational skills (this center successfully transitioned to Hope Services in 2001).

1985

Launched an Adult Developmental Activities Program specifically designed to support individuals with severe disabilities.

1998

Broadened our community reach by introducing Supported and Independent Living services within neighborhood satellite homes.

2001

Created our inaugural Senior Day Activities Program to support our aging population and their unique needs.

2003

Expanded our senior services by opening a satellite Senior Day Activities Program in Salinas.

2009

Secured funding to remodel and optimize our Congress Avenue site, allowing us to launch new, community-focused program options.

2011

Proudly opened Monterey County’s first 15-bed Intermediate Care Facility for the Developmentally Disabled-Habilitative (ICFDDH).

2017

Expanded our specialized care capabilities with the opening of our second 15-bed ICFDDH facility.

2018

Partnered with the Pacific Grove School District to launch the immersive “Without Walls Program” at Pacific Grove Adult School.
